Good News

Image
***Lots of good news this week, at least in my opinion. The Supreme Court struck down mandatory union dues and mandatory abortion counseling in pro-life clinics in California, they also upheld Trump's Muslim travel ban. This is good news not only because I agree with all the decisions, but because they are constitutional. That's what the Supremes are supposed to do - interpret the Constitution. They are not there to legislate from the bench. Equally huge is the fact that breaking today is the news that Anthony Kennedy is retiring. His voting record is pretty mixed...hopefully Trump can hit another home run with the next appointee the way he did with Neil Gorsuch. You think the Democrats have been psychotic up to now? Just wait, this will really send them over the edge. Details here: http://www.scotusblog.com/ *** Civilians around the world become better armed . A note to the folks obsessed with somehow disarming all civilians: You may want to find a new hobby. This part...

Flag Day

Image
***There's just something about seeing the American flag fluttering in the wind that makes me happy. Today is Flag Day! ***From Guideposts.org : June 14th is Flag Day, a day to honor the creation of the American flag. While you probably know the pledge to our Star Spangled Banner by heart, some of these Flag Day facts may come as a surprise. Before you get to ready to display your Stars and Stripes this year, learn about the reason for its signature look, how a high school student influenced its current design, and other things you might not know about the American flag. THE FLAG ACT It may seem like Old Glory has been around since the pilgrims first landed at Plymouth, but the official adoption of  the American flag actually didn't happen until June 14, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to pass the Flag Act of 1777. The resolution created an official flag for the country, just a little...

Status Report

***Wow, I thought I would have lots more time to blog, but that hasn't been the case.  I have had downtime at the store, but I've filled it with sending out resumes, doing my transcription and proofreading here, cleaning and rearranging stuff, etc. I was starting to get a little discouraged with the lack of customers, but it is starting to pick up. The festivals and special events really get started this month, so I'm sure it'll get even better. ***Okay, this is a little sappy, but I like it. From livelifehappy.com Find Happiness Once a group of 50 people were attending a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He started giving each attendee one balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room. Now these delegates were let into that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written within 5 minutes. Everyone was franticall...

Friendly People!

***We have met so many great people since opening Halo, many from out of town. It's fun to chat with them.Sometimes they'll linger for 30-40 minutes just chatting. This has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of our new business, the connection with so many different people. ***Boy do I feel old...Kirk Douglas is 101 years old. Christopher Plummer is 88. Olivia de Havilland is 101. Angela Lansbury is 92. Sidney Poitier is 90. Doris Day is 95. Dick Van Dyke is 92. These were some of my favorite actors and actresses. *** *** Weird stories... When George Boyer was a boy, he didn't want to be an athlete or a rock star when he grew up. Instead, he aspired to be a one-legged man. It wasn't until he was 68 that he got his wish... Boyer shot himself in the leg. The doctors at the hospital said they could save it, but Boyer convinced them to amputate it regardless. Boyer cheerfully lived with one leg for the rest of his life. ...

Looking For the Good

Image
***This is a good article about finding the good in life's storms. Not always easy, I'll admit! Sudden storms are a lot like life. We’re going along fine, and then, all of a sudden, BAM! But storms don’t last forever. And we can even discover some lovely things about them. The winds get rid of debris that would have piled up in the trees. The rain waters the flowers, and leaves everything freshly-washed. It’s the same with our souls. Instead of focusing on the hardships of life’s storms, what if we looked for the good things? Storms can strengthen us. They cleanse our souls. They can get rid of debris, the things that don’t need to be in our lives. Storms are great reminders that even when we’re being pounded, we always have the assurance that God will be with us for every difficult moment. The God who made the storm can certainly calm it, and He will stay with us until those storms are over. During the bad times I'm so thankful for the peace that comes with...

Heartbreaking

***There is nothing worse than knowing someone you love is lost. Not just lost, but actively mocking your faith. When I see something like that on Facebook, or anywhere else, it just kills me - I know what they're missing, and worse, I know the end result if there is no change of heart in their lives. 2 Peter 3:9 King James Version (KJV) 9  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 1 Thessalonians 5:8-10 King James Version (KJV) 8  But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9  For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10  Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Such wonderful promises. It's hard to express the peace that comes ...

Creatures of Habit

Image
***This is a great article I came across in a businessbroker.net email. Where you are in your life is a result of your habits. Will Durant (not Aristotle) said it best: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” I think that’s also true for the  opposite of excellence. Mediocrity is a result of mediocre habits. That means we can go from mediocrity to excellence by changing our habits. But how do you do that? Before we get into that, I want to clarify my statement: Habits change your life, but they do not guarantee success.'' This guy doesn't pull any punches. Worth the read. *** Three ways to set your day up for success. Different plants require different nutrients. Fertilizers come labeled with ratios of potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients that specific plants need. If we feed a plant with the wrong fertilizer, our efforts can backfire, burning roots and stunting growth. Ask yourself, what do I need today...
